These three moms have always focused their attention on
Community. A scholarship fund was created to award college bound seniors
additional funds to help with tuition and books. Each year an essay is required
to enter the competition. This program called Somers Mom’s Scholarship Fund was
founded by Hope Mazzola to serve the people of Somers by providing cooperative
information and community spirit through social networking. Somers Mom’s
Scholarship Fund has awarded five scholarships over the past three years with
funds raised at our Cookie Swap for a Cause rallies.
In the first year, a portion of the proceeds donated were
given to Camp Sunshine in Maine. Camp Sunshine is a retreat for families who
have a child suffering with life threatening illness. Nicole and her family
spent several weeks at the camp. The Cookie Swap helped to purchase a brick on
the walkway representing Nicole and her ALPS family.
In 2015, half of the proceeds collected were donated to
Cures Within Reach. “Cures” was instrumental in getting Nicole in a medication
trial program. Without this medication, Nicole would still be receiving
transfusions, Chemo and have to experience lengthy hospital stays.
In 2016, proceeds and gifts were donated to NYU
Hassenfeld Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and to 9E at NYU Tisch
Hospital. Nicole has received some of her treatments at the NYU Hassenfeld
Center and spent much of her childhood as a patient at the Tisch Hospital. We
were able to fill a treasure chest for the clinic and buy wagons for the 9th
floor. (One of Nicole’s favorite things to do while in the hospital).
This year we are excited to be donating half of the
proceeds to Make-A-Wish Hudson Valley. We will also be collecting Disney themed
toys to be donated to the Wish House. Nicole was fortunate enough to receive a
wish when she was 8 years old. As a family, the Roublick’s traveled to Disney
and stayed in Give Kids the World.
We are looking forward to our 4th Annual
Cookie Swap for a Cause this November 2017. We are proud and honored to be able
to help others both inside as well as outside of community. We are grateful to
Donna Martone and her family for generously donating the beautiful Crystal Hall
at Somers Community Center year after year to hold our event. The Crystal Hall
is located at 34 Hillandale Road, Yorktown Heights, NY, and is the perfect
venue to hold all kinds of special events. Completely renovated top to bottom,
the Crystal Hall holds up to 130 guests with updated Kitchen facilities and two
handicap accessible bathrooms, a private room with fireplace, television and
free Wi-Fi off the main hall. All
located on a beautifully landscaped setting with plenty of parking.
